Trout Fishing in the Tongariro Region

This region (and the Tongariro River in particular) has been called ‘the anglers
El Dorado’ - and for good reason.

These waters literally teem with large trout, and the Tongariro River is regarded by many as the best trout-fishing river in the world.

Even the Queen Mother and American President Jimmy Carter have cast their lines here!

Fishing experiences around the Tongariro region are vast and exciting, to be enjoyed by enthusiasts and beginners alike: Amazing dry-fly and nymph-fly fishing in rivers and back-country streams, heli-fishing to remote wilderness rivers for supreme sight-fishing and, in winter, tackling the steelhead runs to land possibly the hardest-fighting rainbow trout in the world. You can even enjoy a rewarding fishing trip on Lake Taupo or one of our nearby lakes.

With such world-class trout fishing on offer, you might like to employ the services of a a local guide. Experienced, expert locals can offer you a range of experiences, from teaching beginners, through to taking seasoned anglers to the best and most challenging ‘secret spots’

At Turangi (the ‘Trout Fishing Capital of the World’ and just a 20 minute drive from Chateau Tongariro) you can also visit the National Trout Centre. The centre, located on the banks of the Tongariro River, boasts a trout hatchery and an excellent underwater viewing chamber. Children can even have a go at catching their own trout here.
