Advanced mountaineers and rock-climbers will find a vast array of challenges here.
You can abseil craggy lava formations, navigate mountainous ridges, or take on the well-known Chiming Bells, Girdlestone or Cathedral Rock climbs.
There are several local companies who can take you on a guided adventure.
For indoor rock climbing near Bayview Chateau Tongariro, visit the indoor climbing wall located 15km from Chateau Tongariro in National Park. This indoor rock climbing centre offers over 300m2 of wall, 35 top ropes and 55 different climbs. The centre is suitable for both beginners and advanced climbers from grades 10 to 27. For $12 per person enjoy gear hire and free instruction. Open daily 9.00am to 8.00pm.
Ruapehu Rocks is able to offer your guests safe and exciting outdoor rock climbing anywhere in the national park, including Meads Wall! All equipment is supplied and all you will need to bring is suitable clothing and lunch. $80 per adult per day (prices current as of 2/5/07).
