EXPLORE THE MANY SPECIAL THINGS CHATEAU TONGARIRO HAS TO OFFER
At Chateau Tongariro we have a deep and abiding commitment to conserving both our heritage and our outstanding natural environment. During your stay, we hope you’ll take advantage of all our amenities, whether you’re hosting a meeting, a party or the wedding of your dreams, surrounded by towering evergreens, cascading waterfalls and majestic volcanoes.
OUR HISTORY
Every nook and cranny of Chateau Tongariro has a story to tell.
The awe-inspiring mountains and rich forest of Tongariro National Park were given by Paramount Chief of Ngati Tuwharetoa, Horonuku Te Heu Heu Tukino to the people of New Zealand in 1887, laying the foundation on which our hotel is built. The gift ensured the land would be protected and open for all time to all people, a commitment we still hold dear.
After a new road gave access to the mountains in 1925, we opened the Chateau Tongariro Hotel in time to welcome guests from across the globe in the opulent glory days of the “”Roaring ’20s””, and the hotel works hard to preserve the atmosphere of that glorious era to this day.
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
In addition to Chateau Tongariro’s rugged and natural 9-hole golf course and the sports courts at the Village Playground, the Dual World Heritage Tongariro National Park is a gigantic alpine adventure land in its own right. You can follow your own whims on the well defined walking tracks or join up with tours and guides to immerse yourself in the glory of nature.
Our hotel is the perfect base for everything from trout fishing to skiing, hiking, mountain biking and climbing. The level of activity is up to you, but a comfortable bed, a relaxing environment and delicious food to keep you going are guaranteed.
SKIING & HIKING
Whakapapa Ski Area needs no introduction for the people of New Zealand, and countless international travellers have also fallen for its charms.
With New Zealand’s biggest ski field minutes away, visitors to Chateau Tongariro are in the perfect position to enjoy the best that modern skiing has to offer. Lifts, trails, slopes and equipment are meticulously maintained, yet blend harmoniously with the natural environment.
HIKING
The world-renowned Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a challenging, 20km alpine trek that you’ll never forget, is often called the best one-day walk in New Zealand.
MOUNTAINS IN SUMMER
When the ski lifts go silent, the mountains hum to a different tune.
A chairlift ride up Mount Ruapehu in the summer lands you at Knoll Ridge Chalet, 2,020 metres above sea level, where you can sip wine while admiring the mountain and marvel at a photographic exhibition of historic eruptions.
The many other options available include a guided walk up to Mount Ruapehu’s sparkling Crater Lake and the gentle, 30-minute Meads Wall Walk, where can discover the area’s links with “”The Lord of the Rings””. Just pick up a map from the Whakapapa Visitor Centre to open up a world of possibilities.
TROUT FISHING
Many anglers vouch that Tongariro trout fishing is the best in the world, and the likes of the Queen Mother and American President Jimmy Carter are among those who have visited to cast a fly or 2.
From dry-fly and nymph-fly fishing in rivers and backcountry streams to heli-fishing in remote wilderness rivers, there’s no end to the fishing opportunities in the Tongariro region.
If you can pull yourself away from the water, you can discover more at the National Trout Centre in Turangi, only 40 minutes’ drive from the hotel.
ENLIGHTENED PROVISIONS
In a spirit of inclusivity and camaraderie, Chateau Tongariro Hotel embraces a world culture that broadens the experience for all of our guests.
The hotel can provide the Holy Bible or Holy Quran and prayer mats upon request as well as access to a prayer room during their stay, while our multicultural workforce includes citizens of countries from all over the world. Muslim-friendly meals can also be arranged for advance group bookings.
