Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Adventurous spring and summer visitors to Chateau Tongariro are always delighted to find that they’re only 20 minutes’ drive from the start of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. A must for experienced hikers, the legendary 8-hour, 20km trek is renowned as New Zealand’s best one-day walk.

If you decide to take on the challenge, you’ll be rewarded with a trip through dramatic volcanic terrain, passing mountain hot springs, ancient lava formations, waterfalls, lush forest and iridescent crater lakes, all with unforgettable views of Mount Taranaki, Mount Ngauruhoe and the Kaimanawa Ranges.

This is a challenging alpine trek, and the Whakapapa visitor centre or the hotel are happy to provide maps and advice to help you make the most of the adventure. At the end of the day, you can revel in your achievement back at Chateau Tongariro, and there’s no better reason to book a massage at the spa.

Start your day on the right foot and let the team at Chateau Tongariro arrange a tailor made lunch pack for the walk. Enquire at reception the evening prior and it will be ready for your departure.
